Once-in-a-generation striker Erling Haaland secures a chance to play in his first major tournament next summer, thanks to his efforts with Norway to the World Cup.

Furthermore, the 25-year-old Manchester City striker achieved it with outstanding performance, registering 16 goals in eight World Cup preliminary games - finding the back of the net consistently in each of those matches.

This establishes him as the leading goalscorer in 2026 World Cup qualifying in any continent.

And his country's 4-1 win against Italy on Sunday, featuring a Haaland brace, means they will be playing in next summer's World Cup in the American continent.

The striker commented post-game: "I'm delighted, but more relieved. There's considerable expectation and factors, and I experience it. But it's enjoyable."

This represents merely their fourth World Cup, and their initial international competition since the 2000 Euros.

The Crucial Role Was Haaland's Contribution?

His goal tally for Norway is truly extraordinary.

He has scored 55 goals in 48 matches for his country.

And in fact he is just the sixth footballer ever, and the initial one in over five decades, to register 50 finishes in less than 50 appearances.

Norway's previous highest scorer was 33-goal Jorgen Juve, who maintained that achievement for 90 years.

During these qualifying matches he scored 16 goals - in eight encounters - plus two assists.

This amounts to double the scoring total any competitor has netted in UEFA matches.

He stands as the leading goalscorer in these qualifying matches in all continents, including areas where national sides participate twice as more games.

Beyond a full year has elapsed since Haaland last failed to score in a international appearance.

Team Effort Alongside Haaland

Yet it isn't just a one-man show.

Skipper Martin Odegaard, 26, has greater goal contributions than any competitor in European preliminary matches - seven.

The Gunners playmaker has featured in 67 matches for Norway since his first appearance at the tender age of fifteen.

"Merge Haaland's accomplishments with the fact that in this period we also have Martin Odegaard," commented an analyst.

Historical Importance of World Cup Spot

For the premier occasion in decades Norway fans will experience the excitement of backing their squad in global competition.

Their nation participated in the World Cups in 1998, 1994 and 1938, and Euro 2000.

Erling's dad, Alf Inge, featured in the 1994 tournament.

Erling has previously said surpassing his father was a significant personal target for him.

"Norway will cannot win the World Cup," Haaland stated to a major publication recently.
