Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at Eighty-One Years of Age
The world grieves the passing of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican reggae singer and actor whose distinctive voice played a key role in popularizing reggae music across the globe. The artist has died at the age of 81.
“With deep sorrow that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode and subsequent pneumonia,” wrote his spouse Latifa on Instagram. “I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and colleagues who shared his journey. To all his supporters around the world, please know that your support was his motivation throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was also signed by their children, their son and daughter.
Cliff was beloved for hits including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat sound and uplifting spirit earned him a large and loyal fanbase.
Beyond his musical achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 drama film “The Harder They Come”, a role that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a cornerstone of Jamaican cinema.
He was among the select few of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the esteemed Order of Merit from Jamaica.
