Nicolas Sarkozy Set to Write Jail Diary Documenting Two Dozen Days Incarcerated
The ex-president of France is preparing a personal account next month titled Diary of a Prisoner, chronicling the period spent behind bars.
This news emerged just 11 days after Sarkozy was released while he contests his conviction on charges of unlawful coordination regarding a scheme to obtain political financing linked to the leadership of Muammar Gaddafi.
Prison Experience: Solitary Musings
“Inside jail visibility is limited, and nothing to do,” he writes in a preview, implying the memoir centers around his reflections from isolation rather than wider commentary regarding the overcrowded and struggling French prison system.
“I forget silence, which is missing in La Santé, where one hears a lot to hear,” he states. “The noise unfortunately never stops. Yet, similar to barren lands, personal reflection is strengthened while incarcerated.”
Court Appearance: Describing the Ordeal
At his release request hearing, he was present by video link from a room in prison, characterizing his incarceration as gruelling. He stated to the judge: “I must acknowledge to all the prison staff, displaying remarkable compassion, and who helped make this difficult experience bearable – since it’s deeply troubling.”
“I didn’t expect that at 70 years of age, I’d be in prison. It’s a trial that has been imposed on me. I confess it’s hard, it’s very hard. It affects one on any prisoner as it’s exhausting.”
First of Its Kind
Sarkozy, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, set a precedent as past president from the EU and the first postwar leader in the French Republic to experience jail.
Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he would use his time to write a book.
Books in Prison
Unconfirmed is if he found the opportunity to read and critique the volumes he took into prison: a two-volume biography of Jesus together with Dumas’s work the famous story, a plot where an innocent man is imprisoned then breaks out to take revenge.
Life in Confinement
He remained in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a room approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility in the city. Security personnel occupied an adjacent room.
Sources mentioned his diet consisted solely dairy snacks while inside worried that any food may have been contaminated. He had facilities to cook for himself yet he declined, as per accounts. It is uncertain if he will detail his dietary choices.
Defense Viewpoint
Sarkozy’s lawyer, who saw him regularly daily while he was in prison, told the release hearing security would be better released than inside. “He has faced menacing messages, listened to yells during nighttime and the urgent intervention in an adjacent room as a detainee harmed themselves.”
Charges and Sentence
His incarceration began on 21 October after the judiciary gave him five years in prison on conspiracy charges over a scheme to acquire political donations for his 2007 presidential race.
He disputes the charges challenging the decision, and a fresh trial is scheduled for early next year.
