According to figures released by Israel, at least 98 Palestinians have died while detained beginning in October 2023. An advocacy organization based in Israel has reported that the actual number is likely considerably greater, because of many of unaccounted for people in Gaza.

Civilian Casualties

Confidential official information suggests that the vast majority of Palestinian prisoners from Gaza who perished in jail were non-combatants, based on a related examination.

During May of 2024, a defense forces registry tracking all fighters in Gaza, a list of more than 47,000 named individuals, documented merely 21 deaths in custody. By that point, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had perished in detention.

An effort to charge additional individuals over a severe beating including sexual violence caused public rallies and the arrest of Israel’s chief legal officer, with the accused individuals now requesting that allegations against them be dismissed.

No Legal Action

“Regardless of this significant total of casualties, over two years not one individual has been detained,” the official said. “There exist no indictments over any fatality.

“During the time these measures are being applied, all Palestinian detainees in detention faces risk, also the physically well individuals, even the juveniles who have no health problems.”

Prominent Examples

Certain fatalities in confinement have been publicly known, for instance a 50-year-old hospital director who perished in detention after a third of a year in detention.

A prisoner detained alongside the individual reported that he was brought to the yard by guards immediately preceding his passing, visibly injured and exposed from the lower body. His corpse remains unreleased to Gaza.

Further inmates who died in confinement by Israeli authorities stay unnamed. Detention administrators and military supplied analysts with the figure of casualties in confinement, and limited additional information including the facility where they lost their lives, but without the prisoners’ names.

Documentation Problems

In 21 cases, mainly individuals from Gaza, investigators were not able to connect the limited information provided by authorities to a death registered by rights organisations, either through accounts from former inmates or accounts in the press.

The inmates’ next of kin might not have learned about their family members’ fatalities as well, as Israel has created obstacles to track Palestinians it is confining.
