Senegal's Emerging Talent Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

As I enter the room, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout our chat. It’s a simple symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his path in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough

This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to victory and earning best player.

Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives support to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his competitive fire, after being shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. He is often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the main top prize in the future.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
