Teacher Killed and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Gunbattle at Nigerian School

Armed conflict at educational facility
Educational institutions in the northern part of Nigeria have often been targeted for weapon-wielding factions

Gun-wielding individuals have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The criminal group invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.

The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.

An educational worker was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.

Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into nearby bushland.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and suspected escape routes.

In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who frequently execute kidnappings to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency plaguing the region, causing relatives in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they wait and hope for their daughters' safe return.

Security crisis in the northern regions of Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the past few months, with learning centers suffering the most of the conflict.
