This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a local firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: joyful, diverse, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Every time, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
