Our team is analyzing images and video circulated this morning that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the location of where the images were from was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.
Identifying other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
