Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky appears to have departed from a Washington summit without securing the requested long-range Tomahawk missiles from US President Donald Trump.

Zelensky remarked following the civil meeting that both leaders had discussed advanced missile systems, but decided to avoid public declarations on that matter "since the US administration does not want an escalation."

President Trump's Position on Weapons Transfer

Although Trump did not rule out providing Tomahawks to Ukraine, his tone during the Washington meeting was non-committal.

"With hope they won't need it, hopefully we'll be able to get the war over without considering these weapons," Trump remarked, noting that America required the missile systems for its own security.

Trump said that sending the missiles would be "an escalation, but we'll be talking about it."

This high-level summit occurred just 24 hours following Trump held telephone discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and arranged to meet him in Budapest soon.

After the discussions, the US president used his social media platform to urge Kyiv and Moscow to "stop where they are" and end the war.

The Ukrainian leader suggested that his country could provide drones in return for the missile systems, a proposal that elicited positive reactions from Trump.

When asked about whether the possibility of Ukrainian forces obtaining the advanced missiles had influenced Putin to agree to meet the US leader, the Ukrainian president answered, "It's unclear," adding that the prospect had caused Russia to be "afraid since it is a strong weapon."

When questioned if he was leaving the US capital with greater optimism that his nation would receive the missiles, he said, "My approach is realistic."

Zelensky believes that employing these missiles to target Russian oil and energy facilities would severely weaken Putin's war economy.

"Justice and freedom will win, and all the terrorism and evil will disappear," said one Ukrainian store owner. "We simply wish to exist peacefully, we refuse to surrender, we only desire to be left in peace."
